Embracing Growth: My Journey with Toastmasters and Networking Events

In life, there are moments that push us out of our comfort zones and into new experiences that ultimately shape who we become. For me, one of those moments came recently when I decided to step into the world of public speaking and networking events.

It all started when I first heard about Toastmasters from a podcast based in the US. Intrigued by the concept of a supportive community dedicated to improving public speaking skills, I was surprised to learn that there was a local chapter right here in Saint John. The idea of honing my presentation abilities seemed appealing, especially as my workplace encouraged professional development.

After some encouragement from my manager and a nudge from a superior to pursue public speaking and presentation classes, I finally took the plunge and attended a Toastmasters meeting as a guest. The supportive atmosphere and structured approach to improving communication skills instantly drew me in. It wasn’t long before I decided to become a member myself, eager to embark on a journey of self-improvement.

As an introvert, the prospect of networking events initially seemed daunting. However, I recognized the importance of stepping outside my comfort zone to expand my horizons. So, I began actively seeking out opportunities to connect with others and broaden my professional network.

One such event was “Empowering Women in Business,” a networking event I attended in March. Despite initial reservations, I found myself immersed in conversations with women from diverse backgrounds, each with their own inspiring stories to share. From seasoned entrepreneurs to passionate business enthusiasts, the event was a melting pot of knowledge and experience.

Through these experiences, I’ve come to appreciate the value of public speaking and networking as vehicles for personal growth. While public speaking may not come naturally to everyone, it’s a skill that can be cultivated with practice and dedication. Similarly, networking events provide invaluable opportunities to learn from others, share experiences, and forge meaningful connections.

What I admire most about organizations like Toastmasters is the unwavering support and encouragement offered to newcomers. Despite their own expertise, seasoned members are always willing to mentor and guide beginners on their journey to becoming confident speakers.

In the end, the decision to step outside my comfort zone and embrace new experiences has been incredibly rewarding. Each Toastmasters meeting and networking event brings new insights, challenges, and opportunities for growth. And while the journey may be daunting at times, the joy of self-improvement makes it all worthwhile.

So, to anyone hesitant about taking that first step, I urge you to embrace the unknown and seize opportunities for growth. Whether it’s joining a Toastmasters chapter or attending a networking event, you never know where the journey may lead or what new connections and experiences await. After all, it’s often in the moments of discomfort that we find the greatest rewards.

Here’s to embracing growth, one step at a time.

Until next time,

Mari
